Slicer4 SuperBuild: problem with SlicerVTK.git

sebastian ordas
Hello List,

I followed the instructions in
http://www.slicer.org/slicerWiki/index.php/Slicer4:Build_Instructions

My generated solution manages to get and build cmcurl, CTK, Insight,
teem and OpenIGTLink

But when it comes to VTK, I get the following error (note that I
managed to download SlicerVTK.git using SmartGIT in the same computer
and connection)

1>------ Build started: Project: vtk, Configuration: Release Win32 ------
1>Performing update step (git pull) for 'vtk'
1>fatal: Not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git
1>fatal: Not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git
1>CMake Error at C:/bin/Slicer3/vtk-prefix/tmp/vtk-gitupdate.cmake:12 (message):
1>  Failed to checkout master - repository:
1>  git://github.com/pieper/SlicerVTK.git
1>Project : error PRJ0019: A tool returned an error code from
"Performing update step (git pull) for 'vtk'"
1>Build log was saved at "file://c:\bin\Slicer3\vtk.dir\Release\BuildLog.htm"
1>vtk - 1 error(s), 0 warning(s)
========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ==========

that is, it cannot get SlicerVTK.git
btw, does SlicerVTK.git differ to much from the main trunk in vtk.git?

Any hint will be greatly appreciated

thanks
sebastian

Hi Sebastian -

It's weird that this git checkout fails - are you able to run this
command in a console?

  git clone git://github.com/pieper/SlicerVTK.git

The project site for SlicerVTK is here:

  http://github.com/pieper/SlicerVTK

Basically it holds some patches relative to the vtk 5.6 branch (for
widgets, volume rendering...) that ultimately belong in vtk proper but
aren't ready yet for one reason or another.  Note that the repository
location and contents are subject to change as we get our git workflows
sorted out...

Thanks for trying out the superbuild,
-Steve

Hi Steve;

Yes, it works fine both from the console and SmartGIT

This is weird since git is also used to pull CTK within the same
solution (using Visual  Studio 2008)

let me know if I can try something else

thanks

Re: Slicer4 SuperBuild: problem with SlicerVTK.git

Hi Again,

I hacked the issue by generating the SlicerVTK repository with another
client (SmartGIT) in the same place.
Then it was recognized correctly by the solution
So I managed to build the whole toolkit

Is SlicerQT.exe the target application? Which is the difference with
SlicerQT-real.exe
I made a batch with the paths to CTK and QT, and the application launched!

now, most of the tools are not working. I know that CTK is just
starting, but what to expect already working in Slicer4?
where shall I follow the progress in Slicer4?

any hint will be very helpful

thank you
sebastian

Hi Sebastian -

SlicerQT is a prototype for what will eventually be Slicer4:

http://www.slicer.org/slicerWiki/index.php/Slicer4

It's still a long way from being usable, as you've found out, so
discussions on Slicer4 should probably move to the slicer-devel mailing
list.  Especially if you are interested in helping out :)

In terms of progress towards Slicer4, some places to look are
http://commontk.org and
http://www.na-mic.org/Wiki/index.php/2010_Summer_Project_Week.

Best,
Steve
