registering mri and pet

James Henry Zane Eastabrook
Hello all,

I've been able to register my data set of PETs with MRIs (brain) by creating new volumes
I'm now trying to register them without generating new volumes and the completed with errors message comes up.  I can get a close to perfect manual alignment by making several adjustments to my moving image (MRI) but I need to get them right on par.  Having said that my questions is this. If I've made adjustments to the image scale and orientation will I be able to register the images without creating a whole new volume (so that I can move from background to foreground on a perfectly aligned pet & mri). If so, how?

Thanks kindly
Zane

Re: registering mri and pet

Dominik Meier
Hi Zane

yes you should be able to accomplish all you mention. All automated  registration modules have a menu called "Output Transform" or "Save Transform".  Select "Create New Transform" from that menu and rename it if you wish. For "Output Volume" you select "none". Then run your registration as before. Upon completion return to the Data module and drag your moving image into the transform node created. Some modules (e.g. "Affine") do this for you automatically but many don't. You can then as before select your PET and MRI as fore- and background and fade back and forth.  The only transform where you must create a new volume is a non-rigid deformation, such as BSpline. Everything linear (rigid, similarity, affine) you can view via transforms.

Let me know if this is not what you were looking for. Will gladly help you further. We're also compiling registration cases into a library for user support:

Best,
Dominik
